TCF Canada Scores and NCLC Levels
IRCC converts TCF Canada results to NCLC levels using its official equivalency charts: NCLC 7 requires at least 458 in listening and 453 in reading (out of 699), and at least 10 out of 20 in writing and speaking. NCLC 7 is the threshold for the Express Entry French-language category and the starting point for French CRS points; all four skills must reach it together.
What NCLC levels are
The Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens (NCLC) are Canada's French proficiency standard, the counterpart of the English CLB. IRCC does not use raw TCF scores directly: each skill converts to an NCLC level before program requirements apply.
Key thresholds
NCLC 7: listening 458-502, reading 453-498, writing and speaking 10-11. NCLC 5: listening 369-397, reading 375-405, writing and speaking 6. Higher levels (for example NCLC 9: listening 523+, reading 524+, expression 14+) matter for some programs and points. The TCF→NCLC converter shows the full table.
What the levels unlock
NCLC 7 in all four skills qualifies you for Express Entry French-language category draws and triggers additional French CRS points (50 with English at CLB 5+, otherwise 25). Québec's PSTQ and PEQ and some provincial programs set their own per-skill requirements.
Setting your target
Estimate your level with the free sets first, then aim one band above your threshold to absorb test-day variation; train listening and reading with timed full sets and stabilize writing and speaking above 10.
Frequently asked questions
- What TCF Canada scores do I need for NCLC 7?
- All four abilities must reach NCLC 7: at least 458 in listening, 453 in reading, 10 in writing, and 10 in speaking. IRCC converts each ability separately, so a higher score in one ability does not make up for another below the threshold.
- What TCF Canada scores do I need for NCLC 9?
- NCLC 9 requires at least 523 in listening, 524 in reading, and 14 in each of writing and speaking. Check every ability against the current IRCC table or the converter instead of relying on a total score.
- Does NCLC 7 guarantee an Express Entry invitation?
- No. NCLC 7 in all four abilities meets the language condition for the Express Entry French-language category and can affect French CRS points; an invitation also depends on program eligibility, the pool, and that round's rules.
