AAIP Established Business in Alberta Pathway

This pathway is for a candidate who already owns and operates an Alberta business for at least one year immediately before submitting an EOI. It does not replace the stream criteria, competitive EOI ranking, or Business Application.

What established business means

The candidate must already own and operate the Alberta business for at least one year immediately before the EOI. Registration alone or passive ownership is not the same as evidence of active operation during that period.

Not the same as a proposed purchase

The established-business route is not the same as proposing to buy or acquire an existing business after selection. It tests ownership and operation completed before EOI; a planned acquisition follows the ordinary new-or-purchased-business path and approved business plan.

EOI and Business Application still apply

First meet the stream points grid and other criteria. The EOI is scored and ranked, and a higher-ranking candidate may be requested to submit a Business Application. Existing ownership does not create an invitation or nomination by itself.

What changes after approval

If AAIP approves the Business Application under the established businesses in Alberta criteria, the candidate has no additional one-year operation period after applying and does not sign a Business Performance Agreement. Nomination can follow after the Business Application is approved. Not automatic: nomination still depends on AAIP approving the candidate under these criteria.

Graduate Entrepreneur

Graduate Entrepreneur candidates keep the Alberta post-secondary graduate profile and must meet the Graduate points grid and all current criteria. The established-business rule changes the post-application operating stage; it does not create a separate education waiver.

Foreign Graduate Entrepreneur

Foreign Graduate Entrepreneur candidates must meet that stream's points grid and mandatory minimum criteria at EOI. The existing Alberta operation does not remove the stream's graduate, language, business, or other live requirements.

Rural Entrepreneur

Rural Entrepreneur candidates need an established business in rural Alberta, must meet the Rural points grid, and must include a Community Support Letter with the EOI. Community support and the existing-business history are separate requirements.

Business evidence still matters

Business eligibility, economic establishment, ownership, and active day-to-day management still apply. Evidence should connect the candidate's real duties and business activity to Alberta rather than relying only on incorporation or share records.

Continue operating through IRCC

A nominated candidate must continue operating the business while IRCC processes permanent residence. IRCC decides the permanent residence application; provincial nomination is not federal approval.

TCF Canada thresholds

In speaking/listening/reading/writing order: Graduate NCLC 7 requires speaking 10, listening 458, reading 453, writing 10; Foreign Graduate NCLC 5 requires speaking 6, listening 369, reading 375, writing 6; Rural NCLC 4 requires speaking 4, listening 331, reading 342, writing 4. Results must be less than two years old at EOI. Farm Stream uses a separate paper application and sits outside this three-stream established-business EOI route.
