The task contract: obtain information

Identify your role, the other person's role and your information goal. Move from broad to specific questions: basic facts, time or place, conditions or cost, then confirm one important detail. A memorized list is not interaction; your next question should respond to the answer you just heard.

Original scenario 1: a community gardening workshop

You want to join a balcony-gardening workshop. Ask about the date, materials, fee and registration. Start with “When is the workshop?” or “Do I need to bring my own tools?” Then follow up: “If I do not have a flowerpot, can I borrow one there?” Close with a check: “So I need to register online by Friday, is that right?” Change the next question when the answer changes.

Original scenario 2: a short-term furnished rental

You are looking for a furnished rental in another city. Ask about location, furniture, deposit, move-in time and move-out conditions. Turn an answer into a follow-up: “When is the deposit returned? If the inspection is fine, does it usually take a few days?” Use tu or vous according to the roles in the prompt.

A four-level question ladder
